Save Your Generation

Conan has saved us all the effort of making fun of the iphone, bless his heart. The one problem I have is with the portable shower application. Why would you use it in a shower stall? Silly Conan. This post is really an indicator of how much my inability to sleep is affecting my judgement. Please join me, as I continue to over analyze this skit till about 4:14 am, when I force myself to go to sleep for 20 minutes before work.

Oh Snap!

We've all heard it before, the battle is one of the most epic components of hip-hop structure. Now Timberland and Scott Storch are taking their stab at the art, and each other. Battles between beatmakers, seriously? Maybe I'm a skeptic, but I find it a little strange that Timbo feels the need to drop diss records so close to his own record coming out...maybe it's just coincidence, or maybe all of those marketing classes I've been taking are finally paying off. Stereogum posted the Scott (over-hyped) retort, so I'll throw up the link. Neither sides had anything too bruising to say, and I feel like ole Scotty had some trouble riding his own beat. Maybe he would prefer a skateboard?

Built like Dat

While You're Waiting

Every now and again, I like to take the opportunity to shake things up. Last night, I went to go see the Gym Class Heroes, despite a raging snow squall. The show was a larger production that I was used to. There were banners, and timed lighting, and lots-o-people. It was still sweet to get guest list priority, and that helped to dilute the fact that this was a big deal show.

In non-gym class news, and to kind of piggy back off of TJ's post on the progress of congress, Virgina's congress finally apologized for slavery. Good for them. It nice to see people fess up to their mistakes. There is still no word on whether or not the ten acres and a mule will be delivered.

For any of you who like a particular Regina Spektor, the pre-sale for her new "Live from CA" CD is happening on itunes, and it's only $3.96! Brooklyn Vegan posts the info on a Europe/college tour that will follow.

Lastly, I was perusing other blogs today, as I tend to do when I should be doing real work, and kept coming across hilariously insignificant comments posted by blog readers. Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Metropolitan Segue(jk); they all have awesome comments that sometimes are only loosely related to the subject matter. It's not like there is any thing to be done about it, but I feel like maybe the are better than the actual posts. That says something about focus on content.

These Are The Days When U Wish Your Bed Was Already Made

Poop. It's that day again, which means no more fun day. Today is already a record breaking Monday, due to the fact that I have gone to two jobs before 12 pm. One involved shoveling. Since I blame snow for my ill temperament, and snow is water with an identity crisis, today's lesson is on water!

You Won't See Me Tonight

This past week has been pretty mellow news wise. Not too much that I've been dying to post. I'm praying that I'm guest listed for the Gym Class Heroes show tonight, but if not, it will only make for an appropriate conclusion for an other wise lackluster week. I, unfortunately, am stuck in a community that doesn't celebrate international pancake day, much to my chagrin. Today's only "exciting" news, which I think is pretty awesome, but others may not be too wowed, is that a Sex and The City movie is being made. Michael Patrick King spoke on the fact that a script currently in the works. Mr. Cantone, who plays Anthony Marantino, one of my favorite characters, had this to say to the Metro:
"I know the script is being written and I know it will be brilliant because Michael Patrick King is writing it. I know that I’m in it - I have a nice part in it, I’m told. If it happens, we should film it in the early fall I think"

I'm pretty psyched about this, and I'm more than sure I'll be invited to the premiere. Since I've been so fed up with some of the cloths I've been seeing, I think I may make my own for the opening. Carrie would appreciate my initiative. If you have similar aspirations, The Make Workshop may be something you're interested in. Nestled in the LES section of NYC, Make gives sewing, embroidery, jewelry design, t-shirt reconstruction classes for anyone interested. If you're serious about getting your couture in order, this is a good place for those with the DIY mind frame. Screw you FIT and Parsons!

From the post on Friday, Kevin Barnes explained his nakedness to pitchfork.

This month, although noticeably shorter, has been "toat" amazing. Next month promises to be a lot better, Segue wise. With trips to NYC, CA, and various other adventures that I have planned, it should be pretty decent. I will start posting show information for various shows in California this month, and these will hopefully be up on Wednesday.

Suffer For Fashion

Today, I had the opportunity to do a phone interview with Bryan Poole, a guitarist from Of Montreal. It was a really quick interview, timing out to an intense 10 minutes exchange. Basically, we kept the convo on the topic of the bands live show...and Kevin Barnes...addition to their show in Vegas. Bryan spoke on the influences of Little Richard and "real" live shows that really entertained, and the dichotomy created between older shows and current too cool, indie shows. Which is understandable, but, for some reason, i don't think flailing penises are the answer.

Call me old fashion. Of Montreal will be playing in Philly next month, on March 8th, at the Trocadero.

(I feel he should be wearing pants, but that color eye shadow looks good on him)

Time Will Bind Us To The Guilt Of Commitment

Its gorgeous outside, which makes me elated to actually walk through town. My chipper demeanor only improved upon finding news that MacRock will indeed be happening! Hizzah!. The Drop posted this information a few weeks back, and I apologize that I'm slackin on my pimp in terms of getting this information quickly. The Drop had these things to say about our Beloved MacRock:

* It’s happening.
* The conference will be held later in April. They are aiming for April 20th and 21st.
* This year will be different than previous years as the MACRoCk crew makes the move to be
autonomous.
* There will be a label expo.

So all is right with the Mid-Atlantic world. As soon as the band list is produced, I'll put that up too.

*(I found this picture when I typed in MacRock to google. It's random, I know)

Monday Monkey Lives For The Weekend

I've been told that you know work is getting too excessive when you start looking for the weekend on Monday. So true. It could also be that, after such an awesome weekend, how could I stand to go back to such a mundane work week? In either case, Monday is an inevitability, but there is no reason that I can't relive my weekend vicariously through humorous educational videos. That's why I have chosen today's video solely based upon the fact that one of the characters looks eerily as I did this weekend. Since I have no dedication to order, there actually being a chronological make up behind these shorts, I can play whatever I feel will get us to the weekend faster. Plus, since this week will be filled with more music than most, I bring you:

I thought I Told You That We Wont Stop

This was originally going to be part of my whole weekend post, but it is just too much fun for me to lose it in a larger post. For those interested in the Philadelphia's political arena, Milton Street has announced he is going to run for the position of "King Hood" of Philadelphia. That's "mayor" to the laymen. Luckily, he has filled all of the prerequisites necessary to become mayor of Philly.

1. Commit a Felony (Tax Fraud)
2. Do not reside in Philly (He lives in Jersey)
3. Be related to current mayor who is known for his "moral" standings.

Being very close to the political circles of Philadelphia & Camden, NJ, I feel that Milton's election must happen. There is a legacy to uphold, plus, the poor man's name is Milton. Also, there are the soundbites to consider. In a day and age where politicians are as essential to pop culture as individuals in the entertainment industry, we should really be looking for people who will make us laugh, not just corrupt our civility behind a canvas of good intentions. Here's what Milton has to offer.
In defense to the whole living in NJ thing:
"I sleep where I sleep." -Can't argue with that logic.
On KYW:
“Those that got a problem with what the federal government did to me, go vote for somebody else. Vote for Watermelon Man. I don’t care.”
...Go on about this watermelon man...?

In front of your crib sounding like Chinese New Year

Happy New Year! Last night, I helped celebrate one of my good chum's birthdays, which created a multitude of stories. I think I'm going to have to resurrect my old flickr account just to post all the mustached memories. While we were out gallivanting, so many exciting things have happened (and I'm not talking about Britney's hair snafu)! But now is a time for posting, not nostalgia. Onward!

I'm becoming more and more anxious for warm weather. Or a change of scenery, perhaps both. This gives me a reason to look forward to Al Gore's "Live Earth." On 07/07/07 Al is going to convince us that if he were president, all of these bands would play weekly, in their natural environments:
Pharrell, natural habitat- skate park (or so he'd like you to think)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Snoop Dogg, natural habitat- jail
Lenny Kravitz
Bon Jovi, natural habitat- playing in every bar in NJ
Paolo Nutini
Sheryl Crow
AFI
Melissa Etheridge
John Mayer
Damien Rice
Corrine Bailey Rae
Duran Duran
Snow Patrol
John Legend, natural habitat- Kanye's shadow
Black Eyed Peas
Akon
Enrique Iglesias
Fall Out Boy, natural habitat- up for debate
Mana
Keane
Kelly Clarkson, natural habitat-FOX
Korn
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, natural habitat- below the Mason-Dixon
Ray LaMontagne
Robin Thicke
Kenna

Im getting all giddy just thinkin about it!

Greedy Genius has released his summer line of better than bathing ape kicks. It makes me wish I had a pay check to waste on them, alas.

Luckily, Nas is going to start his own line of sneakers. Apparently Def Jam is synonymous with sneaker line (Jay-Z). The deal is with 310 Global, the same fine folks to give Game his deal. I find it humorous that the same man who claims hip hop was killed by commercialism feels the need to sell sneakers. We all remember the Esco situation. Or the Peter Victor Rodrigo fiasco...who's name sounds more like an arch-nemesis, more so a fashion designer. I'm not gonna front like I never bought a pair of S.Dots, Jay-z's line, but I will say that Nas had better step up the sneaker game if he's really serious about remaining one of my favorite rappers. I can't be let down

Our Good friend Ted Leo is soon to go on tour, in promotion of his new album Living with the Living. For most of you, this is old news, but for those who aren't hip to the jive, go see him play here:
3/28 Philadelphia, PA (Theatre of Living Arts)
3/29 Washington, DC (9:30 Club)
5/5 New York, NY (Webster Hall)

In other concert related news, Busta Rhymes, who was scheduled to play with Jim Jones at University of Maryland Eastern Shore on February 21st, got his concert canceled due to safety concerns surrounding Busta. He's gotten a little to rowdy for his own good. This was probably a good call, due to the fact that Busta doesn't really put out good albums anymore, and stomps on the faces of any fans he happens to retain. Even though, if you have ever been to UMES, you would agree they probably need a good face stompin...ah memories, but I digress.

For those still outraged by the iphone exorbitant costs, the open source community has come to save the day!
FIC has announced an on-sale date for its Neo1973, which is cute, and cuddly, and noticeably 300 dollars cheaper than the iphone! It's user modifiable, and comes chock full o' Linux based operating software.

The Ataris shall be playing a show at the TLA on Tuesday. Luckily, JaLisa came through with tickets, and we shall be off on another one of our famed adventures. She's pretty stoked about it, and I'm always down to ride, so it should be a good time. Sadly, this could be one of the Ataris' last studio albums, and perhaps last tour in promotion of such.

Now I must proceed to clean up the lasagna/ sesame chicken crater formally known as my kitchen. I love birthdays! Happy Sunday.

20 Years of Snow

A wintry mix of snow and ice has been doing a tandem soft shoe on my window sill for the past two mornings. I'm usually displeased by the presence of excessive snow,or any snow, but due to the circumstances (getting out of class), I'm not too disappointed.
I am disappointed, however, in the fact that I've had to change to the "new & improved" blogger. I don't like it at all. Not one bit. It's all bling and what have you, and I prefer my basic, no flash included, blogger.
When I was contemplating not updating my blog ever again, I started blog shopping. Looking at blogs that I would like to be like when I grow up. And Fashion was my saving grace. Our saving grace, because I'm sure you would all be devastated if there was no Segue. So today, I shall report on new, warm, spring fashions for men interested in looking as dapper as possible.

Lets start at the toes:
Puma just sent me a catalogue of sneakers made by Mihara Yasuhiro called Far Eastern Soles. If you get gassed off kicks like I do, this is a line you would be interested in. He just published a limited collectors book with the same name (Far Eastern Sole, in case you've forgotten already) which is an superb connect between sneakers & art.

The selection is really awesome, and this picture doesn't begin to encapsulate the size of the collection. It was the best I could do.

Legs:
Pants are trouble. Not exactly the principle behind wearing them, but finding some that fit me that aren't in the women's department, can be tricky. My good friend who has a dearth of knowledge in products has been preaching the positives of Levi's 501 line. He too, is in the skinny kid boat. I was reluctant to jump on the 501 bandwagon because of the financial qualms Levis has been having, but now, it seems they are back in the black, and I can invest my faith in them.

Ideology:
If you are one of those fashonistas, who adopt a style of dress, I can't very well ignore you, so this is for you. Emmett McCarthy, of Project Runway fame, is having a clearance sale (GASP!). So If using a designer as the sole foundation of a "statement" is your goal, all his stuff is 60%. Go to EMC² | 240 Elizabeth St., Bet. Prince & Houston St. [ 212-431-4134] on Thru Feb 19. Mon-Sat, 10AM-8PM Sun, Noon-7PM.
Barney's is also having a warehouse sale February 15th through March 4th | Mon-Fri 10AM-9PM; Sat-Sun 10AM-7PM; February 15th & 16th 8AM-9PM. Go to 255 W 17th St, Bet. 7th & 8th Aves. [ 212-450-8400].

If you wish to look toward to future of male fashions, instead of whats in the clearance rack, Carlos Campos may be worth your time. Not too professional, but very stark lines. You'll have to wait till the fall to pick some of up. Hopefully I'll be able to afford some by then.

Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays

Ah, Its Monday again. I hate Monday, not because it signifies the beginning of a new work week (I pretty much work all the time, so I never get to enjoy the brief hiatus many know as a weekend), but because I have work at 5am and then go straight from work to Spanish class, which I loath almost equally as work. Another thing that I hate is being sick, more specificily, when all my friends start getting sick. Its bad because then they are often tired, and indirectly trying to get me to be sick, via germs. Therefore, for those sick, or anticipating sickness, I present you with Monday's educational video on germs.

And everyone I know is leaving for the weekend

It was a pretty lame weekend.
Everyone was gone, leaving me with free reign of the house, so I cooked a nice, romantic dinner for two, and ate both. Then I went to sleep at 10:30, leaving me refreshed an energized, and ready to provide you all with exciting news!

HBO has announced the return of Def Poetry. It shall start up again on Friday, February 16th @ 12:30 am. Guests include George Clinton, DMX, Nelly Furtado, Talib Kweli, Carole King & Jill Scott! Its really an awesome show, hopefully the mighty Mos Def can work on his skillz some since the whole "new album" thing didn't work out for him.

Justin Timberlake's new video, "What Goes Around..." is up for all to enjoy. It may be one of my favorite songs on the album, and is worth a viddy.

Also, the Walkmen performed a new song on Soundcheck. I hope the next production is better than the Pussycats album. Which stunk.

Sure Juror played an exifare promoted show at Piano's last night. Word on the street is that they are set to be one of 2007's break out bands. Good for them.

Barack Obama verified his bid for office. "Yay Verily" for some, "get the shot gun, ma" for others.

Today's posts are a little sparse, and its because my mind is elsewhere. With spring quickly approaching, and Fashion Week passing, I realize that I need to go shopping. I feel that a fashion blog that I can rely on is desperately needed. No offense to Ms. Coombe, but I need a man's persective, plus, I can't wear dresses, I don't have the legs to pull them off. The search begins now.

Affinity On High

I seldom get uppity in terms of music. In fact, the only time I have ever gotten close to going toe-to-toe over music was in defense to FOB. It's sad, but true. So here I come to defend their honor, once again! We can still be friends, right Sir?
FOB is either celebrated, or victimized for their self-deprecation, but never have they been accused of faking the funk. Peter & the boys, however, have become increasingly aware of how no matter what the subtext, anyone and everyone will try to pull their true meaning to the foreground. The beauty of criticism. Take their first single, in all its harmonic beauty.
I I am an arms dealer fitting you with weapons in the form of words
And (don't really care which side wins)
As long as the room keeps singing that's just the business I'm in

Yes, they may be aware of their product, but being self-reflexive? FOB never started out with such grandiose aspirations, and it is doubtful that their current market was foreseen by anyone. Even their fans. That being said, the author of they're captivating lyrics would most likely have to draw on personal experience. What would be the logic behind the belief that this would have to change once fame is added into such a simple equation? This equation being; Boy likes girl, girl likes other boy, or doesn't give boy enough attention, or thinks boy is a little too needy, then boy writes song to try and win her heart in hopes that music will make her turn a blind eye to what instinct tells her is a bad situation.

Also, due to the bands antics, (the most lude being Peter's peter) it is safe to say that there is the possibility that real hearts are being broken. Perhaps, this is just me buying into the hype, effectively forlorn. I'll accept that. Maybe, I am forever a believer of the bleeding heart, an analogy that has been over used during this blog discussion. But maybe, just maybe, its because I know FOB wouldn't openly lie to me:
I'm the leading man
And the lies I weave are oh so intricate, oh so intricate

...Crap.

This isn't a blog post, its a question of circumstance

I started writing this post a week ago, after my Monday night film class. This class purpose is to discuss television cultures affect on society. Every week, my professor presents the idea that anything broadcast to the public is a watered down version of quality content. I don't argue this fact. I do however, question how to return to a time where TV wasn't a prolonged commercial with brief breaks for content (which is usually just a diluted commercial)? He suggested some sort of revolution. I'd like to shy away from that idea, at least for now. I'm pretty sure Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch have enough money to purchase a small battalion to crush me moments after I post this, if they even really cared...which they most likely don't. Still I'm curious to how a nation that is so inherently mistrusting of new things, and pretends to be able to see deterioration coming from miles away, can settle for such, crap. Where is our bastion of useful, intellectual information for the masses, not that such a thing ever truly existed, but it was better than the "now". I need a little resolution.

Every Dot-com's Refreshing For a Journal Update

I have tried to avoid excessive gushing about any of the music I really enjoy, and just post relevant, interesting, metropolitan info. Until now. I have also kept quiet on my affinity for the pop-punk turned boy band, Fall Out Boy. Now that there is a video for their song "Thriller" which dons the vocals of Hip Hop Hero Jay-Hova, there is no holding back. I'd really love to hate this album in comparison to their earlier efforts...but I can't. Overly produced, glistening, and packaged with layered back up vocals, I'm still enamoredmored with Infinity On High. To save face, and musical integrity, there are lots of excellent aspects that have intensified the overall enjoyment of this album. There is clearly evidence of attempts toward breaking out of just basic instrumentation. Patrick Stump stated that this album would take a different approach on every track, which isn't necessarily true in the finished creation, but there are signs that this was actually a goal. So if I'm to wear a scarlet FOB on my chest, so be it. It will only complement the bleeding heart on my sleeve.

School is Important

I'm killing time before I go to Spanish class, and felt that it was only fair that while I'm off enriching my intellect, I should post something to help my friends learn and develop also. Therefore, until I run out of these educational videos, I shall post one of these "look around you" clips every week. Happy learnding!

Poppa's got a brand new...hip?

Tonight, purple rain will fall in Miami, and I'm giddy as hell to see Prince do half time. Just don't expect too many theatrics. ESPN & Stereogum tells us that due to the excessive humping antics Prince has utilized during the years of stage presence and off stage (oh Sheila!), Prince needs a new hip. This may limit the amount of moving he will be able to do during future shows.

Jill + Lupe+ The Roots = extra Sunday post

Not done yet.

Jill Scott is releasing a collaborations album. Which is cool, aside from the album art, because Jilly is fantastic. Thanks to the Vegan from Brooklyn, there is a link from that page that informs me that Lupe, who had Jill on his Food & Liquor album, will be touring with the roots. Gasp! Philly & NYC dates, which you will be reminded of in months to come:
Sun 03/11/07 New York, NY Nokia Theatre
Mon 03/12/07 New York, NY Nokia Theatre
Tue 04/03/07 Philadelphia, PA Kimmel Center For The Perf. Arts
Wed 04/04/07 Philadelphia, PA Kimmel Center For The Perf. Arts

Smells Like Content

Hopefully all enjoyed their weekends. Mine was spent devoting energies to several areas, and now I'm pretty beat. Therefore, I'm going to provides some news, then try and keep it movin, so I can get a decent amount of sleep at the end of today. There is a full week of classes from now, until spring break, an although I'm more than dedicated to the cause of posting, I may falter in consistency. But I promise to try! That being said, its story time! Get in a semi-circle around your computer screen.
In festival news, there has been upsetting news in terms of the Highline festival. David Bowie, who has been working closely with the Highline festival, but has backed out of actually performing, due to other consuming projects. In his stead, Deerhoof shall play. I really don't see the trade off, not that I'm knocking Deerhoof, but vs. Bowie, there no contest. I was intending to kidnap my closest friends and go to see bowie, mother also in toe, but now I have to find another reason to nab them.
The dim festival news does not end with Bowie. How could It get worse? The James Madison extravaganza known as MacRock (Mid-Atlantic-conference-Rock!) May not take place this year. Due to poor budgeting, and lack of sponsors, the east coast monster may have crumbled under its own weight. They're myspace is still being checked regularly, so maybe that's a good sign?
The Bamboozle Fest is still a go, and may be my springtime celebration in the stead of the other two productions. The bandlists have been posted on CMJ's cite, and may be the pop punk monster we all prayed it would be. Some of the performances to be drooled over:
My Chemical Romance
Boys Like Girls
Hellogoodbye
Armor For Sleep
Brand New
The Rocket Summer
Weird Al Yankovic*
Yellowcard
Young Love
Coney Island may be getting a new venue, which means I'll go to the island for more than just the Siren festival. There is no definite word yet, but we shall see.
Lastly, at least for now, is some tech news for all those aspiring artists. A few months ago, myspace informed the masses that soon, we would be able to purchase music from the profile pages of our favorite unsigned hype bands ( hype in a non-derogatory manner). Amie Street, who also has a profile on myspace, who have had an online music store since July 4th, has had its profile deleted due to technical errors. Is it possible that Rupert Murdoch isn't as ethical as we all once thought (insert laughter)?

* Just checking to see if your paying attention

New Dancepunk?!

While perusing WCUR's top 40, I stumbled across New Young Pony Club's album. I listened to it, danced, pumping fists flaring in indie fashion. It was a good time. Although, its uncertain if this is a trend revisited, or the solidification of a genre's style, either way, its a good album. Pitchfork even says so.

Where Snoop goes if he gets sick

Dr. Dog's new video, "My Old Ways" is posted on MTV's overdrive page. I would have imbeded it...but yea...overdrive. Anywhoo, its great, and so is their new album We All Belong. It took a while for me to get behind Dr. Dog. I felt like a band that sounds like the Beatles, already existed. They were called the Beatles. Almost two years after a friend of mine introduced me to them, they have taken a firm hold. Lucky for them. Check it out, and enjoy yo selves.

Hipster wha? (warning...excessive "quotation" marks)

A big part of this blog, I hope, is a connection to social mobility. Not necessarily in terms of socio-economic, but societal circles. The title of the blog itself, actually relates to the ability to move between different urban "scenes" effortlessly. This fact is what made the "blipster" article so relevant to the intent of this blog. Therefore, I deem it necessary to note when I have the opportunity to be involved in such whimsical situations.
Friday, I made a trip to fishtown to visit some friends. While there, we came across the opportunity to go to a warehouse party. At this party, all the cool of the cool were in attendance, and it was obvious I was crashing the "popular kids" box social (Indie popular, not frat popular, which are actually inverse popularity). There was even a noise rock/ experimental band playing synths in white painters ponchos. Everyone was vibing on the "music" and I wondered if the appeal of experimental music is that there is protection in the transcendence of understanding things that could otherwise be called ...weird? I only say this because if I were to call this music, for the sake of argument, bad, I would only be accused of not getting "it". Just a thought tho. Enjoy the picture, It came at the beginning of the evening, when things we're "normal."
